Fabric classification : Exploring the diversity of Fabrics

Fabric is defined as a material used for making clothing, home textiles, and other textile products. It is a flexible material composed of fibers, yarns, or other fiber structures. Fabric can be produced through processes such as weaving, knitting, braiding, or non-woven methods.

Fabric classification

1.Classified by different processing methods

(1)Woven Material: These fabrics are created by interlacing yarns arranged perpendicularly to each other on a weaving machine according to a specific pattern. Woven material include denim, satin, serge, and linen. They have a flat texture and high strength.

(2)Knitted Textile: These fabrics are formed by knitting yarns into loops using a knitting machine. Knitted fabrics can be categorized into warp knitting and weft knitting. In warp knitting, the yarn is fed into the needles in a sequential manner, creating loops that interlock with each other. In weft knitting, one or several parallel yarns are fed into all the working needles in the machine simultaneously, forming loops.

(3)Non-woven Fabrics: These fabrics are produced by bonding or stitching loose fibers together, rather than being traditionally woven on a loom. Currently, bonding and needle-punching are the two primary methods used to manufacture non-woven fabrics. This manufacturing process simplifies production, reduces costs, and offers high production efficiency. Non-woven fabrics find wide applications in various fields such as medical supplies, filtration materials, and home goods.

2.Fabrics can be classified based on the composition of yarn materials used in their structure.

(1)Pure Fabrics: These fabrics are made entirely from a single type of fiber. Examples include cotton fabrics, wool fabrics, silk fabrics, polyester fabrics, etc.

(2)Blended Fabrics: These fabrics are made by combining two or more different types of fibers to create blended yarns. Examples include polyester-viscose blends, polyester-acrylic blends, polyester-cotton blends, etc.

(3)Mixed and Twisted Fabrics: These fabrics are made by twisting together single yarns of two different fibers. This results in a twisted yarn with combined fiber composition. Examples include low-elasticity polyester filament twisted with medium-length fibers, or polyester short fibers twisted with low-elasticity polyester filament.

(4)Interwoven Fabrics: These fabrics are created by using different fiber yarns in two or more separate directional systems. This interweaving of yarns results in unique fabric structures. Examples include fabrics woven with silk and synthetic silk, or nylon and synthetic cotton interwoven fabrics.

3.The fabrics can be classified based on whether the constituent materials are dyed or not:

Undyed Fabrics: These fabrics are made from materials that have not undergone dyeing processes. They retain their natural color or remain in a white state.

Dyed Fabrics: These fabrics are made from materials that have been subjected to dyeing processes.

4.Novel fabric classification

(1)Bonded Fabric: This fabric is formed by bonding two pieces of fabric back to back. The bonded fabric can be made from woven fabric, knitted fabric, non-woven fabric, vinyl plastic film, and they can also be combined in different ways.

(2)Flocked Fabric: This fabric is covered with short and dense fiber flocking, giving it a velvet-like style.

(3)Foam Laminated Fabric: Foam plastic is adhered to the base fabric of woven or knitted fabric.

(4)Coated Fabric: This fabric is coated with materials such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), chloroprene rubber, etc., on the base fabric of woven or knitted fabric.
